STAGING Gloucester Hartpury - British Rowing

Gloucester Hartpury

Hartpury College, in conjunction with Gloucester Rowing Club

In 2010 Hartpury College, in conjunction with Gloucester Rowing Club, was set up as one of GB Rowing Team’s Start centres.

Gloucester RC is one of the oldest established rowing clubs in Great Britain, located on one of longest stretches of unlocked water in the country.

The relationship between Hartpury and Gloucester RC has seen the under-18 programme develop into one of the strongest in the UK over the past five years, with excellent facilities both on and off the water.

Hartpury’s rowing students are members of Gloucester Rowing Club, accessing the club’s range of boats and equipment and representing the club at national competitions.

The College itself offers accommodation and education for students on the programme and has access to a strength/conditioning and a cardio-vascular gym, as well as support services covering physiotherapy, sports psychology and lifestyle management. There is also provision for under-23 and senior level rowers train in association with Hartpury University.

The county has already proved itself to be a hotbed of rowing talent, with Olympic champions Alex Gregory and Pete Reed, hailing from Wormington and Nailsworth respectively.

Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne, originally from the Gloucester Hartpury Start programme, finished fifth in the women’s quad in 2014 World U23 Championships before moving to the Reading Start Centre to continue with her academic studies.

Alex Watson earned her first international vest winning a silver medal in the women’s eight at the World Rowing U23 Championships in 2019.
