Durham ARC at the Youth Olympics

Congratulations to John Preston who took part in the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival from January 13 – 18.  John is a member of Durham ARC and rows for Reading University. 

John won gold in the Lwt Men’s 2x and Men’s 8+ and silver in the Men’s 4x-.


The GB rowing team won 7 gold’s, 2 silver’s and three bronze medals.

John was also seventh in the men’s pair at the 2008 World U23 Championships last summer and sixth in the Men’s 4x- at the 2007 World Junior Championships.

1,600 athletes from 25 nations took part in the festival, which is organised biennially in Sydney by the Australian Olympic Committee.  The rowing was held at Penrith Regatta course, where Sir Steve Redgrave won his legendary fifth Olympic gold medal in the men’s four with Sir Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell and Tim Foster.
