Double World Rowing U23 Championships medallist Sam Courty has graduated from the World Class Start programme into the senior squad.

Courty has enjoyed a highly successful start to her international rowing career. She became involved with the sport in 2012 whilst studying at Bath University, and only two years later was selected for the silver medal-winning U23 women’s eight.

In the same season Courty raced at the Commonwealth Regatta, winning silver and bronze medals in the women’s pair and women’s four. She took home a fine bronze medal the following year, racing the women’s four at the World Rowing U23 Championships in Plovdiv. In 2016 she teamed up with Anastasia Chitty to race the women’s pair at the FISU World University Championships, and the pair won bronze.

She made her senior debut in 2017 at the World Cup in Lucerne, finishing seventh with Caragh McMurtry. She was then selected to race in the women’s four at the World Rowing Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, finishing seventh.

Beyond the Boat

Courty is a former equestrian rider who competed at the Horse of the Year show in 2007. She has always been fascinated by sport, and dreams of pursuing a career as a sport scientist with an elite team.

Chocolate, a camera and a friend would top her list of items to take to a desert island, and Chris Hoy, Princess Diana and James Corden are her three dream dinner party guests. If she could swap places with any sportsperson for a day she would choose to be Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Olympic and world champion sprinter. She says: “It would be pretty cool to say you were the fastest woman on the planet.”
