Bournemouth SBC honoured to be at the Pageant

Bournemouth Surf Boat Club says “being part of this historic event is a great honour. Nine surf boats will represent ‘Australia Unlimited’ and will be manned by ex-Olympic Rowers and Australian life-savers flown in especially for the event.  The club owes a massive thank you to all its members, but especially John Clarke and Matt Williams for the hundreds of hours of skilled woodwork they have given to the restoration of their racing surfboat.”

After the event the nine ‘Sweeps’, or steersmen, have been invited to meet the Australian High Commissioner in London as a way of thanks for being ‘honorary Australians’ for the day.  Boscombe Beach, the boat’s usual home, will be seeing a lot of surf rowing action during the summer weeks and the club welcomes anyone who wishes to experience this kind of rowing to come along and have a go!

Bournemouth Surfboat Club was formed in July 2009 when Ellis Hagger and Mark Green came up with the idea during a six hour drive back from Pembrokeshire where they’d been filming on location for the Hollywood film Robin Hood.
