HSCT: South East junior training camp

training at Regatta Centre

The London Regatta Centre played host to the South East Region’s training camp on 5th April, 2008. Twenty eight young people attended from Bewl Bridge, Dover, Kings School Canterbury, Maidstone Invicta, Royal Docks and Shoreham to gain more rowing experience and coaching.

Lead coach Ray Cassidy, Curlew Rowing Club, ensured that all the young people had the chance to train and receiving coaching on the 2000 metre rowing lake and build on their technique and skill in the rowing tank. The theme for the day was preparation for both training sessions and regattas. The juniors were asked to consider what they needed to do in order to be fully prepared for racing taking into account the weather, the nature of the event, opposition and other factors.

Participants were selected to attend from regional trials for the Junior Inter-Regional Team. The team went to Nottingham on 19th April to represent the South East Region but unfortunately due to the weather the only crew to race was the J16 4-, with rowers from Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club.  They came 4th on time narrowly missing out on the bronze medal. The feedback from the day was extremely positive and the two regions plan to run similar events for the 2008/2009 season as joint initiatives.

Thanks must go to the Henley Stewards Charitable Trust for their support, the Amateur Rowing Association, the London Regatta Centre, South East River and Coast Regional rowing councils.  Also a big thank you to all the volunteer coaches who gave up their time to support not only the juniors from their clubs but all those taking part and to the parents who helped throughout the day.
