STAGING Dart Totnes Fun Regatta - British Rowing

Dart Totnes Fun Regatta

Dart Totnes ARC held their annual Project Oarsome Fun Regatta on Sunday 29th June. The event was the culmination of this year’s Project Oarsome programme, run in conjunction with the club’s partner schools, Ivybridge and South Dartmoor Community and Sports Colleges. The programme has seen year 7 pupils from both schools taking part in courses on the indoor rowing machines in their schools, and on the water at the club.

The Regatta was the chance for the pupils to show off their skills and for their family and friends to be introduced to the club.

The pupils were split into teams of four, each named after a famous GB rower.  Each team was headed by one of the club’s existing junior members who acted as ‘team captain’, and guided them around their various activities. These included; sculling skills, speed and technique competitions on the indoor rowers, a rigging challenge, and fun races in quads.

The event marked the end of another successful PO programme for the club and their schools. What was particularly pleasing to see this year was the ongoing help and support from the club’s older juniors, most of whom came through the PO programme in previous years. A number of these juniors have gone on to become Junior Rowing Leaders, Dry Instructors and Level 2 coaches. The club recognised their support, awarding the most consistent volunteers with prizes at the end of the Regatta.

Pupils taking part in this year’s Project Oarsome scheme now have the opportunity to join the club and progress into the club’s junior intermediate group.
