Impressive Indoor Rowing results in the West

Wednesday 30 April saw 289 pupils from over 30 schools descend on UCP Marjon for the Regional Indoor Rowing Championships. Competitors in years 7-11 rowed for a set time depending on their age group and years 12-13 rowed for a set distance of 2000m.

The standard of competition at this years event was very high, with all winners scoring over their target distance. The most impressive score of the day was in the year 7 male race, with winning pupil Andrew Wheeler of Exmouth Community College scoring a massive 111% – 567m in 2 minutes. The top seven pupils in this race also achieved above the gold medal target. Throughout the day the 24 machines were linked up to a big screen, which kept supporters up to date with the results of each race.

Indoor rowing clubs, ran by coaches employed
through British Rowing and School Sports Partnerships, are becoming increasingly popular with schools in the region. The standard of indoor rowing in the region is improving each year, with
competitors from the West often bringing back medals from the National Indoor Rowing Championships.

Exmouth Community College came away from the day with the majority of the team honours, winning the year 7 ‘Project Oarsome’ trophy, the overall boys and overall school trophies. Devonport High School for Girls won the overall girls trophy.

A big thanks to UCP Marjon for their hospitality on the day, to the West region British Rowing coaching team and the several volunteers who helped make the day a success.
