Nominations are now open for the 2018 Volunteer and Coach of the Year Awards – paying tribute to the unsung heroes of the sport
Winners of the 2017 Volunteer and Coach of the Year Awards
The annual Volunteer and Coach of the Year Awards nominations are now open. This is your chance to recognise your volunteering or coaching hero for their outstanding contribution to rowing.
It could be anyone from the rowing community that you think has gone above and beyond or is an unsung hero of the sport.
Regional winners will be selected from the three volunteer awards categories – Volunteer of the Year Award, Rising Star Award and Lifetime Achievement Award – and from the four coaching awards categories – Education Performance, Education Development, Club Performance and Club Development.
From these regional winners, British Rowing will select a national winner from each of the volunteer award categories and the National Coaching Committee panel will select a national winner from each of the coaching categories.
To celebrate the outstanding contribution to rowing made by the regional winners and to announce the national winners, all winners will be invited to a special awards event hosted by the Chair of British Rowing in early 2019.
Take a moment to thank the amazing volunteers and coaches that make rowing possible by nominating someone today for the Volunteer and Coach of the Year Awards.
Nominations will close on Sunday, 30th September 2018 at midnight.

Volunteer Awards
Volunteer of the Year Award
This award is for the volunteer that has contributed most significantly to rowing, for the benefit of many in the wider rowing community, over the past year.
The criteria below provides guidance for the types of individuals that we would like to be recognised and see nominated:
• Those who have shown significant involvement, time and effort in the rowing community, e.g. in clubs, through administration, fleet maintenance etc. or supporting competitions. This could also be at club level, regional level or at a national level
• Those who stand out within the rowing community with their exceptional dedication and commitment
• Those who demonstrate a positive influence to their rowing peers and provide outstanding leadership
• Those who contribute to many different parts of the rowing community
• Those who demonstrate a strong alignment with the core values of their club and British Rowing
• Those who can provide examples of innovative practice
Rising Star Award
This award is for the junior volunteer that has contributed most significantly to rowing, for the benefit of many in the wider rowing community, over the past year.
The criteria below provides guidance for the types of individuals that we would like to be recognised and see nominated:
• Those who have shown significant involvement, time and effort in the rowing community, e.g. in clubs, through administration, fleet maintenance etc. or supporting competitions. This could also at club level, regional level or at a national level
• Those who stand out within the rowing community with their exceptional dedication and commitment
• Those who demonstrate a positive influence to their rowing peers and provide outstanding leadership
• Those who contribute to many different parts of the rowing community
• Those who demonstrate a strong alignment with the core values of their club and British Rowing
• Those who can provide examples of innovative practice
Lifetime Achievement Award
This award will be presented to an exceptional long-standing volunteer to recognise their achievements through an extended period of dedication to our sport.
The criteria below provides guidance for the types of individuals that we would like to be recognised and see nominated:
• Those who have shown significant involvement, time and effort in the rowing community, e.g. in clubs, through administration, fleet maintenance etc. or supporting competitions. This could also be at club level, regional level or at a national level.
• Those who stand out within the rowing community with their exceptional dedication and commitment
• Those who demonstrate a positive influence to their rowing peers and provide outstanding leadership
• Those who contribute to many different parts of the rowing community and can demonstrate so over a sustained period
• Those who demonstrate a strong alignment with the core values of their club and British Rowing
• Those who can provide examples of innovative practice
• Those who can provide examples of sustained programmes which have enabled the work to be continued beyond their involvement
• Those who have helped to grow the sport significantly
Notes
• All those nominated must hold a current British Rowing membership
• All those nominated for the ‘Rising Star Award’ must hold a British Rowing Junior membership
• All those nominated for the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ should have given at least 15 years’ service to the sport
• No nominees need to have any formal sports qualifications
• Nominees must be volunteers and so receive no financial reward for their services
• Each region will select one winner for each of the categories in the Volunteer Awards and advise British Rowing who will then organise certificates and badges for all regional winners.
• British Rowing employees are not eligible for these awards.
Nominations for individuals who are predominantly coaches should be submitted for the Coach Awards below.
Coach Awards
Education Performance
Awarded to the coach who has made the most significant impact on the performance of either an individual or a group of rowers at national level events such as BUCS Regatta, European Universities, The National Schools’ Regatta, The British Rowing Championships, Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta during the 2017/2018 season. This award is open to all rowing coaches working in the education sector, including schools, further or higher education.
Open to either paid or volunteer coaches working with rowers in full-time or part-time education.
Education Development
Awarded to the coach who has made the most significant impact on their educational institution by providing opportunities for those new to the sport to become involved in rowing. We are looking for programmes that have built on good coaching practices, drawn on the resources available to them, such as the Learn to Row programmes and have led to a sustainable increase in membership. This award is open to all rowing coaches working in the education sector, including schools, further or higher education.
Open to either paid or volunteer coaches working with rowers in full-time or part-time education.
Club Performance
Awarded to the coach who has made a significant impact on the performance of either an individual or a group of athletes involved in higher level club performance. This could include coaching juniors, seniors, adaptive rowers or masters at higher level competitions, such as The National Schools’ Regatta, Marlow Regatta, the Metropolitan Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta, Henley Women’s Regatta, The British Rowing Championships and World Masters.
Open to club volunteer coaches.
Club Development
Awarded to the coach who has made the most significant impact on their local community by providing opportunities for new groups of people to become involved in the sport of rowing. We are particularly looking for programmes that have built on good coaching practices, drawn on the resources available to them, such as the Learn to Row programmes, and have led to a sustainable increase in membership at local clubs.
Open to all volunteer coaches.
Coaching Team
Awarded to the team that has made the most significant impact on the performance and/or development of a group of participants.
Open to coaching teams and may include a maximum of one employed coach.
Notes
• All those nominated in the coaching categories must hold a current British Rowing membership and be over the age of 18.
• All coaches nominated must have a coaching qualification relevant to rowing and recognised by British Rowing. The only exception to this is when a member of a team nominated in the Coaching Team Award category is being led or mentored by a suitably qualified coach.
• All those coaches nominated who are coaching junior crews must have current DBS clearance with British Rowing.
• Each region will select one winner for each of the categories in the Volunteer Awards and advise British Rowing. British Rowing will organise certificates and badges for all regional winners.
• British Rowing employees are not eligible for these awards.
The National Coaching Committee panel will select an overall winner from each of the coaching categories.
The regional winners of each category for the Volunteer Awards and the overall winners and commendations from the Coaching Awards will be invited to an awards event hosted by the Chairman of British Rowing.
