Typhoon skirts Gifu to give World Rowing a Monday start
Typhoon Mawar skirted around Gifu, Japan, and the World Rowing Championships can now start this Monday (29 August).
British rowers in Gifu, Japan, like their international counterparts, had hunkered down over the past few days to shelter from expected typhoon force winds and rains. In the end, though, it was a storm that never showed up.
Japanese organisers have since been busy putting the course back out on the river and teams have been taking their boats out of secure storage to train once more on the water.
This means that racing will begin at 9.30am (local Japanese time – eight hours ahead of the UK) on Monday with heats in the lighweight men’s and women’s singles as well as the open weight men’s and women’s singles, pairs and doubles. The morning’s programme will conclude with the men’s four heats.
Tuesday’s programme, again starting at 9.30am, will feature: the men’s coxed four; the lightweight men’s pair; the lightweight men’s and women’s double and quad; the lightweight men’ s four, the men’s and women’s open weight quads and eights.
All repechages will now be on Wednesday 31st with the programme then reverting to its original outline of semi-finals on each of Thursday and Friday with finals on Saturday and Sunday.
